I am fascinated by the delicate and mysterious qualities of cold, snowy days. The bustling city gets strangely quiet and empty; solid shapes seem to dissolve like apparitions into a dense, frozen shroud.

Just as the Pont au Change connects one bank of the Seine to the other, the bridge in this painting leads the eye from the foreground buttresses to the midground opposing bank. Once across the river, the viewer perceives the soft, backlit building silhouettes which evoke the tranquility of a late afternoon turning into evening. This calmness is reinforced by the muted characteristics of a limited palette. It is, however, the strong diagonal of the bridge, together with the lively brushstrokes of the rippling water, that activates an otherwise quiet, four-part composition.
